ASHTALAXMI

Introduction “Lakshmi is commonly known as Goddess of wealth. Wealth is not only the money. Tradition and values of life is also wealth. Our family and progress is also wealth. Our belongings such as land, properties, animals, grains, etc as well as virtues like patience, persistence, purity etc in the form of a character are nothing but our wealth and so also glory or victory. Thus this eightfold Sri Lakshmi is known as Sri Ashta Lakshmi.

Mother Lakshmi is the source and provider of the following enumerated well-known sixteen types of wealth and many more: (1) Fame (2) Knowledge (3) Courage and Strength (4) Victory (5) Good Children (6) Valour (7) Gold and other gross properties (8) Grains in abundance (9) Happiness (10) Bliss (11) Intelligence (12) Beauty (13) Higher Aim, High Thinking and Higher Meditation too (14) Morality and Ethics (15) Good Health (16) Long Life. Let us glance upon the glory of mother Ashta Lakshmi’s individual nature and forms.

1. Adi Lakshmi: Mother Lakshmi resides with Lord Narayana in the Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Narayana. She is known as Ramaa, means bringing happiness to the mankind. She is also known as Indira (who holds lotus or purity in the hands or heart.) Divine Mother’s this form is normally seen serving Sri Narayana. Lord Narayana is omnipresent. Adi Lakshmi or Ramaa Lakshmi serves Sri Narayana is symbolic of her serving the whole creation. Though Sri Narayana is attended by innumerable devotees, still she personally loves to serve the Lord. Actually mother Adi Lakshmi and Narayana are not two different entities but one only. Many a place we see her form sitting in the lap of Sri Narayana.

2. Dhanya Lakshmi: Dhanya means grains. This includes all kind of purified food containing all essential vitamins, minerals, protein, calcium, carbohytrade and so on. With the grace of mother Dhanya Lakshmi one gets all essential nutrients grains, fruits, vegetables and other foods.

3. Dhairya Lakshmi: This form of mother Lakshmi grants the boon of infinite courage and strength. Those, who are in tune with infinite inner power, are always bound to have victory. Those who worship mother Dhairya Lakshmi they live and lead a life with tremendous patience and inner stability.

4. Gaja Lakshmi: In the holy book of Srimad Bhagavata the story of the churning of the ocean by Gods and demons is explained in detail. Author, the Sage Vyasa writes that Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). So she is known as a daughter of the ocean. She came out of the ocean sitting on a full-bloomed lotus and also having lotus flowers in both hands with two elephants by her sides, holding a beautiful vessels filled with milk and pouring it over Sri Lakshmi. Many a time we see Sri Lakshmi standing in the lotus and elephants are pouring nectar over her. During the festival of the lamps or the Deepavali along with Sri Lakshmi the Ganapati or the Elephant God also gets worshipped; that signifies the protection from evils as well as abundant grace and blessings for additional prosperities!

5. Santan Lakshmi: In the family life, the children are the greatest treasure. Those who worship this particular form of Sri Lakshmi, known as a Santan Lakshmi, are bestowed with the grace of mother Lakshmi and have wealth in the form of desirable children with good health & long life.

6. Vijay Lakshmi: Vijay is victory. Vijay is to get success in all undertakings and all different facets of life. Some are strong physically but weak mentally while others are economically rich but poor in their attitude and cannot exert any influence. Vijay is to have all encompassing victory. Vijay is to rejoice glory of our real nature – Vijay is to conquer the lower nature. Vijay is the victory in external and internal wars and of course eternal wars! Hence those, with grace of mother Vijay Lakshmi, have victory everywhere, at all time, in all conditions. Victory to Vijay Lakshmi !!

7. Dhana Lakshmi: Dhana is wealth. But as per Rigved’s Purush Shukta Dhana is not only a wealth in coins and currency. Even Sun and moon, fire and stars, rains and nature, oceans and mountains, rivers and streams, all these are our wealth, so are the progeny, our inner will power, our character and our virtues. With the grace of mother Dhana Lakshmi we will get all these in abundance.

8. Vidya Lakshmi: Vidya is education. Education is not mere studies to receive the degrees and diplomas certificates from the educational institutes or universities”

Rise and worship

The rise of the Ashta Lakshmi is directly proportional to the rising popularity of Ashta Lakshmi Strotam. Around 1970s, a leading Sri Vaishava thelogian called Sri U. Ve. Vidvan Mukkur Srinivasavaradacariyar Svamikal  published a poem called Ashta Lakshmi Strotam dedicated to the eight Lakshmis. Narayanan comments: “Although these attributes (which represent the wealths bestowed by the Ashta Lakshmi) of Sri (Lakshmi) can be found in traditional literature, the emergence of these eight (Ashta Lakshmi goddesses) in precisely this combination is, as far as I can discern, new.”
The Ashta Lakshmi are now widely worshipped both by Sri Vaishnava and other Hindu communities in South India. Occasionally, the Ashta Lakshmi are depicted together in shrines or in "framing pictures" within an overall design and are worshipped by votaries of Lakshmi who worship her in her various manifestations. In addition to emergence of Ashta Lakshmi temples since 1970s, traditional silver articles used in home worship as well as decorative jars ('Kumbha') now appear with the Ashta Lakshmi group molded on their sides. Books, popular prayers manuals, pamphlets sold outside temples in South India; ritual worship and "a burgeoning audiocassette market" are also popularizing these "new" eight forms of Lakshmi.

Temples

  • Ashtalakshmi Kovil, Besant Nagar, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India: The Ashta Lakshmi Kovil, built in 1974, is the first shrine dedicated exclusively to the Ashta Lakshmi where Lakshmi is given greater importance than Vishnu. It has eight small shrines arranged in clockwise direction, dedicated to the Ashta Lakshmi and then a ninth shrine dedicated to Vishnu and Shri-Lakshmi together, unlike the traditional separate shrines.
  • Ashtalakshmi Temple, Vasavi Colony, Dilsukh Nagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India
  • Ashtalakshmi Temple, Sugar Land, Houston, Texas, USA
  • At the entrance - leading from Vittavasal Street to Meenakshi Temple, Madhurai, a mandapam (Hall) called Ashta Lakshmi Mandapam is dedicated to the Ashta Lakshmi, the statues of which support the roof on either side.

EULOGY ON SHRI MAHALAXMI

EULOGY ON SHRI MAHALAXMI

I bow to You, Who is the Mother of all the worlds, Who is associated with lotus, Who is splendor, Who has blooming lotus as eyes, and Who is seated at the chest of Vishnu.||1|| I sing praise of Goddess, Who lives in a forest of lotus, Who holds lotus, Who has lotus-like eyes and face, and Who is dear to lotus-navelled Vishnu.||2||
You are magical-knowledge, self-position, oblation, divine-nectar, purifier of the world, evening, night, light, prosperity, intelligence, dedication, and knowledge.||3|| O Shobhna! You are the Yagya-knowledge, the deepest knowledge, the secret knowledge, and the knowledge of self. O Goddess! You also liberate us from mundane-existence.||4||
You are logical philosophy, the three Veda, discussions, law of punishment, and O Goddess! You fill the world with various serene and not-serene forms.||5|| O Goddess, Who is like a divine-nectar! Who else, apart from You, could have got a seat on the chest of Vishnu, Who is the abode of all the sacrifices, Who is meditated upon by Yogis, and Who holds a mace.||6||
O Goddess! Discarded by You, three whole worlds had approached destruction. Now you have restored it.||7|| O highly fortunate Goddess! By Your glance only, a man gets wives, sons, friends and relatives, and luxuries.||8||
O Goddess! The men, who have been glanced by Your eyes, don't find health, wealth, weakness of enemies, and comfort as a rarity.||9|| You are the mother and Vishnu is the father of the worlds. And this whole world is manifestations of You and Vishnu.||10||
O Purifier of all! May You not leave the treasures, the cow-shed, the home, the properties, the body, and the consort.||11|| O the one Who is seated on the chest of Vishnu! May you not leave the sons, the well-wishers, the animal-property, and ornaments.||12||
O Amala! Those men, who have given up by Sattva (purity), truth, cleanliness, serenity, and other qualities, are driven away by You immediately.||13||And when glanced upon by You, immediately all these qualities of serenity and splendor of lineage get affixed to the men and formless as well.||14||
O Goddess! That who is seen (blessed) by You is worthy of praise, full of qualities, satisfied, in a good lineage, wise, brave, and glorious.||15||
O dear One of Vishnu! You have at once attained all the formless qualities and virtues present; averting others You became the Mother of the world.||16||
The tongue is unable to describe You with all its virtues and qualities. O Goddess with lotus like eyes! Shower happiness on me. Never again stop the bliss on me.||17||
Notes:
This eulogy appears in Vishnu Purana after the episode of ocean-churning where Lakshmi reincarnates after the curse of Durvasa to Indra.
